Bodie, East Side ride torrid first half to victory

Aaron Bodie got Newark East Side off to a quick start Monday afternoon by pacing the offense with strong interior moves and some overpowering putbacks.

A little later in the game, the 6-6 senior decided to reward the strong moves of others and also take away the need for putbacks with some crisp passing.

All part of being the veteran leader of a young team that sometimes needs to be shown the way before figuring it out for themselves.

Bodie scored 12 of his 18 points and hauled in six of his 12 rebounds in the first half and handed out three of his four assists in the second to guide East Side to a 53-35 win over Paterson Kennedy at the Freedom Fighters Hoop Challenge at Paterson Eastside.

"I had to get my teammates more active in the game. I can't do everything," Bodie said. "They need to be able to pick us up, too, so I have to get them the ball. That's the only way we’re going to keep getting better."

East Side (7-4) is certainly moving in the right direction, winning for the fifth time in the last six games and showing the kind of scoring balance that will ultimately make it difficult for opponents to focus entirely upon Bodie and fellow senior starter Jamal Reid.

Reserve sophomore forward Abdul Lewis tossed in 10 points, sophomore forward Ishmael Sanogo scored nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Reid finished with eight points, six rebounds and six assists. Paterson Kennedy (6-4), which is also a young club, got 20 points from senior guard Sammy Singletary.

East Side finished last season at 18-9 and with grand expectations for 2011-12, but veterans Tariq Carey (St. Anthony) and Kasim Chandler (Imani Christian of Pa.) transferred out last summer. That left Bodie and Reid as the Red Raiders' only returning regulars.

That lack of varsity experience was glaring in the first two weeks of the season as East Side lost two games by one point each and another by five.

"It was very frustrating," Bodie said. "I was used to two other people having the balll in their hands, last year--Tariq and Koz-- so it’s a big change. We still have a younger team, so they still have to get used to playing at varsity speed."

The 6-6 Sanogo was ready for the pace against Kennedy by taking command of the offensive glass to drop in seven first-quarter points. Bodie added six to help forge a 15-6 lead, and followed that with six in the next period (along with sophomore Jamar Gilbert with a pair of 3-pointers) as the Red Raiders' lead grew to 31-14.

"It's been very challenging, but every win is nice," Bodie said. He entered the game averaging 12.1 points, 14 in the previous three games. "The point guards are getting more familiar with each other and they're learning how to play with each other, and so are the bigs. The team chemistry is definitely getting there."

La Roche men’s basketball guard, Andre Flanigan, has been named the La Roche Player of the Week for the week of November 28, 2011.
Last week, Andre led the Redhawks in scoring, assists, and steals as La Roche went 1-1. Andre recorded 8 points and 4 rebounds in a 71-66 loss to St. Vincent and 17 points, 11 assists, 7 steals, and 6 rebounds in an 84-69 win over Geneva.
Andre is a 2010 graduate of East Side High School (Newark, NJ).

Chandler Named Nov. 21 Pioneer of the Week

WAYNE, N.J. – Men's basketball junior guard Corey Chandler (Newark, N.J./Newark East Side)

Chandler was selected as the Stevens Tip-Off Tournament MVP, and in three victories last week he averaged 22.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 2.7 steals per contest. He posted 17 points and three assists during a 72-61 season-opening victory Nov. 15 against York (N.Y.), shooing 6-for-12 from the floor. Chandler led WP with 21 points, six assists and three steals during an 82-66 win Nov. 18 against King's in the first round of the Stevens Tip-Off Tournament, and he had a double-double with 28 points and a game-best 11 assists, adding eight rebounds and five steals in a 112-107 triple-overtime victory against the host Ducks Nov. 19 in the championship game.

NJ Hoops Top 20 Preview: Newark East Side

Overview Surprisingly a pair of three year starters 6-foot-2 Tariq Carey and Kasim Chandler left the program. Carey ended up at St. Anthony's and Chandler left the state for prep school. Two year starter, junior Will Joyce also transferred. He surfaced at Piscataway Tech. Despite these substantial defections to the starting lineup there is still talent on hand.

Backcourt

6-foot-1 Senior Jamal Reid can hit the three and score in bunches. 5-foot-10 Junior Stephon McNair and 5-foot-10 So. Akbar Hoffman have excellent quickness and can handle the rock.

Frontcourt

6-foot-6 Sr. Aaron Bodie is a quick leaper who plays above the rim. He attacks the glass well and can make the highlight reel with his dunks. 6-foot-5 So. Ismael Sanogo is one of the better young big men in the state and has drawn comparisons to Bodie.

Bench

6-foot-7 Sr. Shauntez Hill showed he could be a factor with his play this summer and fall. 5-foot-10 So. Jamar Gilbert transfers in from Newark Tech and could see significant minutes.

Coaching

An interesting dynamic on the sidelines at East Side as Bryant Garvin and Anthony Tavares have successfully worked as co-Head Coaches the past few years.

With many college coaches on hand, many players shined at the Island Garden in West Hempstead on Sunday.

Sunday was the feature day of Hoop Mountain’s Long Island invasion at the Island Garden, as the region’s top D2 and D3 coaches came out to watch the future stars of their programs. The day began with athletic testing. Once that was completed, the players took part in individual skill development drills. After, they were divided up into teams and engaged in round-robin match-ups. The games were close throughout, as players showed tremendous effort on both ends of the floor, making the games seem more than just “showcase” games. With over 100 players from the NY area, several stood out:

Top Performers:
Aaron Brodie (Newark East Side)- The senior definitely demonstrated the most polished post game of any player here. Able to get open easily in the post, the 6’6’’ Jersey product seemed relaxed and confident catching the ball and making his move. He had all the coaches buzzing with the types of spins, fakes, and rip throughs that should definitely make him a threat at the next level.

Rumors regarding 2012 point guard Tariq Carey have been swirling around the recruiting circuit. Statements have been made that Wake Forest is his only offer and that the Demon Deacons are his clear cut favorite, but Carey denies both of these accusations. In fact, the highly touted ball handler has official offers from seven schools and Wake Forest is not one of them.

"I don't know what happened. I went to camp down at Wake Forest, and a scout put up that I had an offer. That's just not true," Carey said. "I don't have an offer from them. I thought I would have had an offer by the way I performed, but I don't so it is what it is. I don't have any favorites right now because there are a lot of schools that are showing interest in me. I'm definitely open to everybody."

One viable option for Carey happens to be SMU, which extended an offer two weeks ago. The New Jersey native has a growing interest in the Mustangs after initially visiting the Hilltop as a freshman and loves what both the program and school have to offer.

"SMU called and offered me right after the Reebok Breakout Challenge. They said that they like my game and stuff like that. They want to try to get get me down there, and they think I'll be a good fit in Conference USA," he said. "They really noticed me when I played there at their school during the Reebok Underclassmen as a freshman. I like that SMU plays in Conference USA, so you can't go wrong. I saw them play a couple of times last year, and I like the way they play.

"I actually went back down there for a visit after I played there as a freshman so I know a lot about the school. The campus is nice, and it's in Dallas. I would definitely feel comfortable playing there. Basketball is big down there so I know I'll get a lot of love, and I have a good relationship Coach [Matt] Doherty. Steve Lutz, who recruited me back as freshman left to Creighton, but I still like SMU, and they are definitely in the running. "

Carey hopes to see an even bigger spike in his recruitment this fall after transferring from East Side to St. Benedict's Prep at the end of this past school year.

"I start at St. Benedict's in August. I transferred right after the school year finished. I played a lot of summer league games with them, and we were 11-0. It seems like a lot people don't respect inner city basketball so I just decided to do what's best for me and take my talents to St. Benedict's," said Carey of the move. "The coaches are really great. Their head coach Mark Taylor coached at St. Joe's Metuchen when Jayson Williams and Andrew Bynum were there so he has a lot of information to give out. Troy Long is still my mentor, he handles all of my recruitment."

As Carey stated, he still keep in close contact with Troy Long, who coached him at East Side and helped him make the transition from shooting guard to point guard last season. When asked about his former player, Long praised Carey's abilities on the court and affirmed that the 2012 prospect would be a valuable asset to any Division I program.

"This summer has been all about showing colleges that he can play point guard. He's sacrificed his scoring numbers and is out to prove that he can run a team. He's done a good job, and his size for the position is great," Long said. "I think if he goes to a mid-major, he can make an immediate impact. If he goes to a bigger school, I see him as a role player during his freshman year, then breaking out as a sophomore. I just think he has a tremendous upside."

Carey has spent all summer playing AAU, but plans to take some recruiting trips soon. The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder, has an idea on where he wants to take his official visits and will begin narrowing down his list before summer ends.

"I want to try to get down to Clemson and Virginia soon. I don't have any officials planned yet, but by September I should know what's going," Carey said. "I definitely want to take a trip back down to SMU and Marshall so those are two definite schools right there, but as far as the other ones, I'll just have to wait."

Carey also added that he will make his final decision during early signing period.

Tariq Carey- Carey, a 6’2 guard who runs with the New York Panthers on the AAU circuit, showed off an ability to handle point guard duties at the college level today. Off the bat, Carey hit a runner in the lane then slashed to the basket for a tough layup. More impressive than his ability to score the ball was his ability to get easy baskets for his teammates. Carey unselfishly dished off the ball at least twice on breaks, leading to dunks or layups. Based off his performance today where he showed that he can manage a game at the point, it would be surprising if Carey didn’t see his share of high-major interest throughout the rest of the summer.

Tariq Carey had a solid day. The 6-foot-2 guard made plays, attacked the basket and even worked in a few jump shots. He also proved to be a hard worker, doing extra skill development activities when his team was scheduled for a break.

Jamal Reed Led East Side In Just June League

The league showcased 9 teams with Paterson Eastside, Hudson Catholic, Teaneck, Newark East Side, Columbia, Hackensack, Nia Prep, Englewood and East Orange all participating! The first 8 made the playoffs as the action has been tough and each team has been preparing for the season with a mixture of veteran players and incoming freshman! Newark East Side finished as the #1 seed for the playoffs!

The 6’2 guard scored in various fashions on Saturday. From knocking down long-range three’s to finishing at the rim, Carey caused havoc for opposing defenders. Sports U Takes Title

Sports U emerged as champions of the Hoop Group Headquarters Spring Jam Fest in two seperate divisions. Sports U beat Team Phiily for the titles late Sunday afternoon in the 17 & Under and 16 & Under brackets. They came out on top from fields of 28 and 24 teams respectively.

In the 17 & Under championship 6-foot-6 Britton Academy NC Sr. Dustin Hogue scored on a putback with :01 remaining to give Sports U a 57-55 win. The New York native was named MVP and finished with a team high 15 points.

6-foot-7 Trenton Catholic Jr. Brandon Taylor paced Team Philly with 19 points and 4 treys.

Roadrunners Take Title

The NJ State 17 & Under AAU Tournament wrapped up early Sunday at Linden High School with the championship and 3rd place games. The Roadrunners edged the Hot Shots for the 2011 title.

The Roadrunners (Jamal Reid and Aaron Bodie) emerged from a field of 24 teams. Trailing 40-37 heading into the final quarter the Roadrunners took control of the game and held onto it from the free throw line. They converted 14-17 free throws in the final stanza.

6-foot-8 Union So. Tyler Roberson paced the winners with 17 points and 11 rebounds. 6-foot-8 Roselle Catholic Jr. Jameel Warney was high for the Hot Shots with 16.

Nitty Gritty Begins at IS8/Nike

One would assume that when the playoffs begin at iS8/Nike Spring HS Classic, playtime ends. The intensity grows fiercer and the scoreboard gets tighter.

However, Thursday night's inaugural playoff games for the Spring 2011 season disproved that theory, as the Panthers (2) and Pennsylvania-based Sportsfest.org put away their opponents without much hassle.

Panthers subdue TGT Warriors, 73-63

For the first six minutes of action, this one had the potential to get ugly. The Panthers (2 / 17U) squad employed a taxing press that turned TGT over repeatedly. The mid-range touch of Travis Flagg and the open court prowess of Tariq Carey helped the Panthers make a push at the other end of the floor, and they consequently secured an early 16-2 lead. To make matters worse for TGT, one and done offensive possessions meant they had another Achilles' Heel in the rebounding department. However, they eventually threw some of the Panthers' medicine back at the NYC unit and showed signs of life.

TGT's 2-2-1 press exploited some of the Panthers' lackluster possessions, and an 8-2 run to close the first quarter got the Bronx-based TGT back into the game. Hot-shooting senior guard Jonathan Loria began to percolate in the second quarter, and with a little help from Donte Adams, chipped the Panthers' lead to three points, 30-27. The duo would go on to score all 32 of TGT's second half points, with Loria putting on a clinic and finishing with a game high 29 points. It wasn't enough, though. Flagg and Carey drained back to back threes at the top of the second half to deflate the Warriors, and the latter drained another later in the period to bring the Panthers' lead back to double digits, 55-43. TGT were never able to get over the hump and never held a lead in the contest.

Carey and Flagg led the Panthers with 17 and 16 points, respectively. Ryan Yearwood chipped in with 9 points. Adams was the number two scorer for TGT with 24 points.

The Panthers (2) will face NIA Prep on Saturday at 9AM.

Panthers II Flatten Mountain Ball

LONG ISLAND CITY, NY - On Sunday, Mountain Ball from Hyde Park, NY would become educated in the ways of the iS8/Nike.

In a tournament whose motto is "Bring your game, not your name", Mountain Ball came equipped only with the latter.

Obviously virgins in the tournament, up against the NY Panthers who've won multiple chips in event, the outcome became clear early on. Even though it was the junior Panthers squad, Mountain Ball would still end up losing, 73-40, in a game that literally turned into a practice session.

The final pool play game for both teams was played at Variety Boys & Girls Club. It would be the Panthers who would strike first, jumping ahead 11-3 as Tariq Carey and Eddy Guisarry put up transition points. Mountain Ball did manage some interior points as big man Keon Scott and JaQuan Bryant showed some offensive prowess.

Ahead 19-9 as the second quarter began, another 8-0 run with points in the paint by Travis Charles pushed the Panthers lead to 18 points midway thru the quarter and 43-16 at halftime.

Down by 30 at the end of three quarters, Panthers head coach Paul Ruddock used the fourth quarter to teach his students the art of playing keep away.

Without a shot clock, Mountain Ball was defenseless against the Panthers ability to run time off the clock. Even though the Panthers tried not to score, they still managed to increase their lead to thirty-three before the refs mercifully called the game.

Carey and Charles led the way for the Panthers with 13 points apiece while Bryant was the high man for Mountain Ball with 12 points followed by Scott with 8 points.

At 3-1, the Panthers are in a three way tie for first place in their pool while Mountain dropped to 1-3 excluding themselves from playoff contention.

It may have been raining outside intermittently but inside the gym at Intermiate School #8 the reign was steady.

Two games were scheduled on Thursday and although each game took a different path, the out was the same, a blowout. In the opening contest, the NY Panthers (2) took on the MetroHawks followed by Playaz Club Jrs. versus Royalty.

Panthers Eat MetroHawks, 52-30

Carlos de Jesus, rising senior from J.F.K Campus got the ball rolling got the Panthers, spearheading an 11-3 run from the perimeter. Jeff Neverson would cut the Panthers lead to 5 points with 2 minutes left in the quarter but a late surge left MetroHawks down 19-7 to start the second quarter.

The Panthers lead extended to 16 point before Leroy Fludd began to do some work in the interior but Tariq Carey finished strong keeping the Panthers advantage steady. Addition buckets by De Jesus and Eddy Guisarry would keep the point spread at 34-17 at the half.

The third quarter was a mirror image of the second as the MetroHawks' deficit remained at 16 points at throughout. At the bottom of the fourth quarter, the MetroHawks had all but checked out as runner by Travis Flagg extended the Panthers lead to 20 points. If this were a movie, the credit would've begun to roll as the Coach Paul Ruddock and his Panthers would close out the MetroHawks.

Carry led the Panthers with 16 points with De Jesus and Guissary dropping 8 points apiece. Neverson and Fludd would lead the MetroHawks with 11 points and 10 point respectively.

Newark's East Side High basketball personifies team effort heading into state tournament

Anthony Tavares stalks the tiny space along the sideline in front of his team’s bench, pointing fingers, shouting directions and stomping the hardwood for emphasis.
His forehead is doused with sweat.
His voice is grinding its way to oblivion.
And during timeouts, he crouches in front of the players, his head swiveling from face to face as he barks instructions.
The scene at Newark’s East Side High is similar to that of most boys basketball teams except for one detail: Tavares is an assistant coach. The head coach, Bryant Garvin, sits during games and whispers in the players’ ears during timeouts while Tavares shouts at them.
This quirky coaching configuration seems to be working at the school in Newark’s Ironbound section. In a decade together, Tavares and Grant have won two Essex County championships, two sectional titles and a state crown, making East Side arguably the most consistent team in Newark. Today, the Red Raiders (17-8) open the state tournament as the No. 2 seed in North Jersey Section 2, Group 3.
“They absolutely do not have the ego,” said Liz Aranjo, the former East Side athletic director who now is director of health, physical education and athletics for Newark public schools. “The players are definitely the focus, and that’s what these guys care about.”
Tavares, Garvin and the six other coaches in the East Side program each has a specific job. Dan Sharpe sets up the SAT tutoring program. Troy Long handles college recruiting. Robert Cole oversees feeder programs. Uron Hawkins keeps track of grades. John Thomason and James May coach the freshmen.
And no coach is more important than the next, prompting them to pool together their coaching stipends and split the money evenly eight ways, Tavares said.
To see Tavares, 32, and Garvin, 40, during a game is to see something that feels like a perfectly timed symphony of shouts and screams. They often instruct in concert — Garvin, from his chair, often using one-word instructions between Tavares’ constant chatter.
“It’s kind of natural for us because we just have to listen to both coaches,” East Side center Aaron Bodie said. “Coach Gar inspires us and Coach T motivates us. It’s like a team effort.”

As crisis counselor at East Side, Garvin has seen his share of altercations in the hallways, but the one in 2000 was different. A student believed to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol was attacking his father.
Garvin, a former college football player, tried to restrain the student, but felt something almost immediately as they tangled. He had collapsed two vertebrae that pinched against nerves in his spine, causing him to lose feeling in his legs.
Four screws would be inserted in his back to stabilize his spine and Garvin missed almost four months of work. The injury changed his lifestyle.
“If I do anything wrong, moving the wrong way, I can have some major issues where I could be out for a while,” said Garvin, who still looks fit and trim but moves with a slow gait. “I have to keep myself still and keep my blood pressure low.”
Despite his back problems, Garvin took the job in October 2001 at the urging of the East Side administration, which thought his stern approach would help quell the negativity surrounding the program. Garvin knew he would have to sit during games because of his back, but that was only one of the challenges he would face trying to turn around a program mired in scandal.
Ed Leibowitz, the previous coach, had been suspended indefinitely and the program was put on two years’ probation by the state’s governing body for high school athletics after an investigation into the sudden appearance of foreign basketball players at the school.
“There was just no order. There was a lot of chaos,” Aranjo said.
When Garvin was hired, Aranjo urged him to bring on board Tavares, a former East Side player. First Garvin wanted to meet Tavares.
“He sat down with me and he said, ‘I’ll do anything and everything you want,’ ” Garvin said. “I told him if we’re going to do this, we’re going to do this together.”
In their second season, Garvin and Tavares led East Side to the Group 4 state championship.

During a Feb. 15 game against Columbia, the animated Tavares earned a technical foul for arguing, restricting him to the one place he never wants to be: the bench.
Even though it’s mandatory for coaches who earn technicals to sit the rest of the game, Tavares crept out of his seat several times, sometimes crouching low and slamming his chair against the ground to get his players’ attention.
“If Coach Garvin wants you to do something, he’ll pull you to the side and talk to you about it and make sure you try and apply it,” Bodie said. “Coach T, he just tells you in front of everybody. He’s just always amped.”
Garvin, on the other hand, is a man of few words and his players know it’s important when he speaks. It’s all part of the plan at East Side.
“It takes a village to raise these kids and we definitely have a nice support system,” said Tavares, who is now a vice principal at East Side. “We’re all in the building. We all stay on top of the kids so they can be role models for all the other kids in the building.
“All eight of us complement each other tremendously. There’s no ego. It seems to work pretty well.”

Villanova to retire jersey of Newark native Randy Foye

Randy Foye, a former New Jersey high school player of the year and standout at Newark's East Side High School, will have his No. 2 jersey retired at Villanova on Saturday at the Pavilion, according to a post on the school's website.

Foye was a consensus All-American and the Big East's player of the year as a senior in 2005-06.

"I'm honored to be joining the elite company of Villanova Basketball players with their jersey retired," Foye said in a statement. "My four years on campus were extremely memorable and I appreciate everyone in the Nova Nation for their support. I'd like to thank Coach (Jay) Wright, my teammates and the entire staff who were instrumental in creating successful seasons during my career. Villanova Basketball is built on a tradition of hard work, togetherness and pride, and I've carried this positive attitude with me throughout my NBA career."

Foye was part of Villanova head coach Jay Wright's first full recruiting class.

After an injury that hampered him early in the season, Randy Foye is beginning to make an impact on the court for the Clippers.
He's been making contributions in other places for some time.
Foye's reputation as a quality individual was influential in the Clippers' decision to sign him as a free agent last summer. And that reputation is born out not only by his conduct with the team, but also with his charitable organization for young people in his hometown of Newark, N.J.
"The big thing is Randy's a leader," said Neil Olshey, the Clippers' vice president of basketball operations. "He's had ups and downs in the league (with injuries), but he's a great guy. And I knew that he was a guy that, after drafting (Eric) Bledsoe, instead of trying to undermine his development to feather his own nest, he would be a guy that would embrace the role of mentor."
The importance of pairing such veterans with young players is something the Clippers have learned the hard way, Olshey admits.
"We had issues in the past where we had the wrong type of veterans around young guys," he said. "And you see it deleteriously affected DeAndre Jordan. It affected Eric Gordon. At times it affected Al Thornton when he was here. And there was no way we were going to put the future of the franchise -- which is Bledsoe, (Al-Farouq) Aminu, Gordon, (Blake) Griffin and Jordan -- at risk, in the hands of veterans that had their own agenda."
Foye has embraced the role of mentor with his Randy Foye Foundation in his native Newark, one of the toughest cities in the world as far as gang violence, drugs and murders. He knows this from personal experience, having had family members involved with drugs, and a mother who disappeared when he was 5.
"I'm just trying to keep kids away from it," he said. "I try to give back, mentor them, talk to them, and tell them everything's going to be all right. ... I always said if I talk to 10 kids in a room, and one of them takes something from me, I feel like I did what I was supposed to do."
Foye seems a little less comfortable with the word "mentor" in a Clippers context -- perhaps because at age 27, in just his fifth year in the NBA, he seems a little young for that role. But he certainly is willing to pass along what he's learned so far.
"When you're young, there's ups and downs," Foye said. "So you always need someone who went through it before, and someone to talk to. When guys are playing great, I always tell them, 'You can never get too high, you can never get too low. The main thing you've got to do is keep working.' "
Foye says the young players repeated that message to him when he was discouraged by the hamstring injury that kept him out of 20 of the team's first 28 games. Only now, a month after returning, does he say he's nearing full health, noting his ability to get off the ground to challenge a dunk by Shannon Brown in last Sunday's game with the Lakers, and his ability to stay with Indiana's Darren Collison a day later.
"My main thing," he said, "is I want to go out there and give the team what I can. And right now, I'm doing a little bit of the little things."
Coach Vinny Del Negro said Foye "can make some shots for us, and sometimes we can go with a three-guard offense with him, get him off the ball and use his skills a little bit more. ...
"He's been a pro. It's just that the injuries set him back early."
That three-guard option was significant in the win over the Lakers, Olshey notes.
"They spread the floor, it allowed dribble penetration, and it opened the whole game up. ...
"I think Randy's best days are ahead of him. He was a little snake-bit with injuries" -- the hamstring injury was preceded by a knee injury requiring arthroscopic surgery last summer -- "but as he gets back to 100 percent and he gets his swagger back, that (lineup) is going to be an incredible tool for Vinny."

PLAYER TO WATCH

East Side's Kasim Chandler is always worth watching for his scrappy defensive play and well-rounded floor game. But for entertainment value, the best time to nix the text messaging and take notice of the 5-9 junior guard is when his team is losing. The entire East Side team kicks things up when facing a deficit in the second half, and Chandler is typically the sparkplug of those rallies. His on-ball defense becomes a bit tighter, passes are a little crisper and his fighting spirit practically becomes a visible statement on his jersey. Three of his squad's last four victories have been comebacks, including a 59-50 decision over Central Dec. 31 in the Newark Public Schools Tournament. This is not to suggest that Chandler, who averages 17.2 ppg. and four assists, occasionally takes plays off until the situation is dire. He never does. He simply has another level of energy and focus that few can match.

Junior guards Kasim Chandler and Tariq Carey had already done plenty to help East Side keep pace with upset-minded Central.

But both knew their jobs would not be nearly done until one of them fed the ball to Aaron Bodie for one of his thunderous dunks. Because when Bodie soars high above the rim and throws one down, it’s always worth a lot more than the two points recorded in the scorebook.

Chandler did the honors with a feed in transition to Bodie, who finished it with a two-handed jam that highlighted an early fourth-quarter spurt and sent defending-champion East Side to a 59-50 victory in the finals of the Newark Public Schools Tournament yesterday before a capacity crowd at Barringer High.

``We had to get a dunk,’’ Chandler said. ``When we got that dunk, the crowd got going, our momentum got going and we started making a little run.’’

That dunk opened a 43-42 lead and Bodie scored again a half-minute later on a putback jam. Carey scored on a fastbreak layup 1:54 into the fourth quarter for a 48-42 lead it never relinquished.

It was not quite as stirring as East Side’s 29-12 fourth-quarter rally that beat University, 62-57, for last winter’s NPST crown. But it was darn good.

Chandler scored a game-high 19 points and also had four steals, Carey collected 18 points and nine rebounds and Bodie closed with 11 points and eight rebounds for East Side, No. 9 in The Star-Ledger Top 20. Central, ranked No. 13 and playing in its first final, received 14 points and six assists from senior guard Patrick Cole and 13 points and 12 rebounds from senior center Ramon Johnson.

Cole was an all-round spark for Central with his ability to locate open shooters or drive hard into the lane and Johnson was a steady presence off the low block. Their team had comeback opportunities, but was undone by 2-of-8 foul shooting in the fourth quarter, 4-of-16 for the game.

``Free throws cost us,’’ Cole said. ``Next time in practice, we have to stop messing around during free throws and take that practice more seriously. How you practice is how you play.’’

East Side likely would have won even if Bodie had kissed in Chandler’s skip pass off the glass instead of jamming it home. But the 6-6 junior is a gifted athlete whose feats are already well known among the student population. Chandler and Carey both understand how important a frenzied fan outburst can be to a run.

``Every time Aaron gets a dunk, the crowd gets up and we go from there,’’ Carey said. ``He’s an engine and he never stops working.’’

Carey was a scoring force in the second quarter with eight points, including four on feeds by Chandler and two on one of his three offensive rebounds. Chandler added seven points that period to help East Side to a 30-29 edge.

``Our coaches said play smart, share the ball and make hustle plays,’’ Carey said. ``Once that happened, things fell into place for us.’’

Cole scored six points and had two assists in the third quarter to help Central grab a 42-39 lead.

SHP Edges East Side In Thrilling Opener To Get SEC-American Season Off & Running

NEWARK- Just another season opener you say…No way, not when two Top 10 teams tip-off 2010-2011 before a packed house, Down Neck, on a Friday afternoon in the hectic Brick City, where Essex County hoops fans willing to brave the holiday traffic in and around Penn Station and a snarled McCarter Highway found it all worthwhile once they sat crammed together while taking in a little primetime Jersey high school basketball.

Seton Hall Prep and Newark East Side treated the fans packed in the Red Raiders’ gym to a memorable debut to the regular season for both Super Essex Conference-American Division teams, each a favorite in their respective state sections this winter, Non-Public A for the Pirates and Group 3 for East Side, and if the first of possibly three meetings this season is any indication of what’s to come than brace yourself.

With junior center Stephon Mosley scoring eight of his 12 points in the fourth quarter, Maryland-bound senior guard Sterling Gibbs pouring in a game-high 30 points, and junior guard Dallas Anglin putting together a solid 20-point, 5-steal performance in his Pirate debut, SHP hung on to edge the Red Raiders, 69-67.

With the two teams scheduled to meet again Thursday, Jan. 20 (7 p.m.) at SHP, and, perhaps, in an Essex County Tournament final the end of February, there could be plenty more fireworks from two teams that appear destined to cause all sorts of headaches for the opposition throughout this season.

“A great high school basketball game between two teams that really played hard,” said SHP veteran coach Bob Farrell, happy to escape Ironbound with a season-opening win. “They are a real excellent team with great penetrators.

“I told our kids that playing on the road we will have to overcome adversity and our kids, for the most part, did that.”

When Anglin connected on a free throw to give his team a 69-66 lead with 5.1 seconds left, the cagey, experienced coach made a critical decision, one which would ultimately pay off: foul the dribbler and force East Side to try and score off an offensive rebound to tie or win the game.

SHP fouled East Side’s superb junior point guard Kasim Chandler (18 points, 4 steals) with 2.5 seconds showing and the Red Raider made the first free throw and purposely missed the second.

However, a tap by sophomore forward Will Joyce was well off the mark and junior center Aaron Bodie’s off balance put-back also was off target.

It was a very long 2.5 seconds since the clock operator failed to start the scoreboard clock right away, but the Pirates survived the extended extra couple of ticks and came away with the win.

“Last year, when we played here, we were up three at the same juncture and they had the ball,” recalled Farrell. “I told our guys to stay on the shooters and don’t get sucked in, but we got sucked in, they missed a wide open ‘3’ and I said I wasn’t going to take that chance again.

“I wanted them to win on an offensive rebound…The timekeeper said to me he was watching play and was sorry….It was some exciting basketball game, that’s for sure!”

East Side’s splendid 6-2 junior guard Tariq Carey (18 points) scored six points in the final 1:20 and his two free throws with 53.1 seconds left brought the Red Raiders to within 66-64.

After a Mosley layup off a nice feed from Anglin with 43 seconds showing, Carey hit a runner, to make it 68-66, with 29 seconds still left.

A key block by SHP junior guard Zahki Davis led to the ball going out of bounds and the Pirates regaining possession with nine seconds remaining.

Anglin missed the front end of a two shot opportunity at the charity stripe, but made the second, setting the stage for the coach’s decision to foul and not allow the tri-fecta to tie.

“He’s been doing this for 34 years and Coach Farrell knows everything about basketball,” said SHP sophomore swingman Spencer Weisz, who didn’t score, but had a fine floor game (12 rebounds, five assists). “We have total faith in our coach and if he wants us foul we’re going to foul.

“Heck, it all worked out in the end and we earned a hard-fought victory against a very good East Side team!”

Anglin, watching his backcourt mate Gibbs put on yet another superb show, his classmate Mosley come up big with key buckets and rebounds in the fourth quarter, and the rest of his teammates hold off a splendid Red Raider squad in a classic season opener, couldn’t help but soak in the afterglow of a fine debut for all, including himself.

“This is a great way to start the season, against a very tough team, but we knew it would be hell coming in here,” said Anglin, who played his freshman season at St. Peter’s Prep before transferring early in his sophomore year (Jan. 11, 2010) to SHP and sitting out the rest of last season. “Sterling is simply clutch and Stephon is a great prospect whose in my grade and I love playing with him.

“This is a great group of guys and coach Farrell has us ready for every situation. It definitely was a tough game, but we’re thrilled to begin the season with a big victory, that’s for sure!”

There is not great depth although the reports on freshman Ismael Sanogo are good.

Coaching
Year's back the administration went with almost co Head Coaches in Bryant Garvin and Anthony Tavares. They have done a remarkable job working together and creating a winning program.
Season Prediction
Our pick for the Group 3 title although Teaneck will provide a major challenge. The interesting aspect of the roster is there are no seniors in the nucleus.

Tariq Carey The Newark (NJ) Eastside guard finished with 8 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals for the NJ squad on Sunday. Carey has bounced around the AAU scene, playing some with the NJ Playaz last summer and indicated he is now playing with the NY Panthers. Carey is looking forward to the upcoming high school season and is putting the recruiting process aside for now as the number of schools showing interest in him continues to grow.

“It’s going good,” Carey told Jeff Borzello Sunday night, “but I just took a step back to just focus on my game because I really don’t want to worry myself about that right now. I’m not making the decision right now, so until then, that’s when I’ll worry about it. But it’s going good overall.”

As for the schools, Carey updated NBE off the top of his head, but there are more and more schools showing interest that he is having trouble remembering them all.

“Clemson, Virginia Tech, Creighton, Wake Forest, Villanova, Providence, Seton Hall, Notre Dame and Duquesne, and a lot of others,” Carey said. “I can’t remember all of them right now.”

BS: What are your thoughts about last season?

RC: We had a great season! 16 tournaments (8 championships, 2 runner-ups, 4 Final Four, and 3rd place AAU National “Classic Bracket” Champions). WOW! Who could ask for more?

BS: What did you think about our final top 10?

RC: Nothing, just one perspective on an entire season of basketball.

BS: How do you feel about the new grade exception rule?

RC: Legalized cheating at the AAU level; AAU will get more teams competing at D2 and D3 level; disadvantage to those D1 teams and athletes that have competed against 3 grade exceptions at any given time, because they are now forced to play against unlimited 14-15 year olds that are bigger and stronger. I also think it will promote parents to hold their child back for the sake of dominating a particular age group just because the rules say they can.

BS: How will this rule affect your team?

RC: As a coach it’s a non-factor for me because I will continue to prepare my team to play the game of basketball. My players have always been undersized and under aged compared to many of our opponents, like David and Goliath. This year we may not win or have many runner-ups during high-profiled tournaments, but they will know we are in the building. As you know Mike we never back down, therefore with this new rule in effect we will get on the hardwood and do what we do best, PLAY BALL….BTA!

BS: What’s the first thing come to mind when you hear these words?

My coaching style and discipline will prepare them for life and future basketball endeavors. Pride, discipline, respect, and hard work are our motto and it works, evidenced by what you see on/off the court from my players and parents.

BS: If you left basketball today how do you think Rob Cole should be remembered?
RC: My accolades as a player and coach speak for itself. I got the job done on/off the court (player/coach). I don’t think but I know that I will be remembered as one of the best athletes and coach to ever have a hand in the game of basketball.

Perhaps overlooked and underrated because he doesn’t play at one of Northern New Jersey’s perennial Top 25 USA Today programs, Tariq Carey feels he deserves some respect. Carey is an active guard with good athleticism and size for a rising junior. The Newark (NJ) Eastside product plays hard on both sides of the floor and has really improved his all-around. He has an ability to get into the lane and finish or distribute. Carey can score with contact at the rim and showed a much improved ability to connect from three-point range on the AAU circuit when NBE saw him with the NJ Playaz 16U team. Defensively, he is very aggressive and is adept at racking up steals and starting fast breaks.

With all that ability and an impressive list of schools involved in his recruitment, Carey is scratching his head when he looks at top 100 rankings around the internet.

“I definitely feel I’m underrated, but that comes with it [playing at Newark Eastside versus one of Northern New Jersey’s many prep powers],” said Carey recently at the Five-Star Super Session camp in Brewster (NY). “It’s really not a big deal to me, but as far as one to be noticed I feel I’m noticed, but I just want to be in the Rivals Top 100. I think I should be in the Rivals Top 100 and Scout.”

Carey however has gotten a good deal of interest from colleges at this early stage.

“Interest is [from] a lot of schools…Missouri, Creighton, Wake Forest, Notre Dame, Seton Hall, St. John’s, Villanova, La Salle, Georgia, so it’s a lot of schools,” said Carey. “As far as offers Georgia offered and Seton Hall, Creighton and Wake Forest are pending on the season because they are waiting for their 2011 class to be done.”

Carey says Notre Dame, Creighton and Wake Forest are recruiting him the hardest, but it is the ACC program of the group that stands out as he has grown up a fan of the Demon Deacons..

“Yea right now there definitely number one,” said Carey of Wake Forest.

Carey has already visited the campus in Winston-Salem in June as he was down there for their Elite Camp, but he will likely return in the near future for another visit once basketball practice begins in October and take in a football game as well..

“They told me they wanted me to come down for their Midnight Madness and come down for any games, football or basketball,” said Carey.

Creighton also is likely to get a visit this fall from Carey and he also made an unofficial to Villanova with a few of his high school teammates.

“I actually went up there [Villanova] for an open gym and I played with the team,” carey said. “They invited us to an open gym. It was real good I played with Malk Wayns and Corey Fisher and I held my own.”

Despite Carey’s proximity to the Prudential Center, The Rac and Madison Square, he is not overly interested in playing in the Big East.

“I wouldn’t mind playing there [in the Big East] but as far as that being my main conference I want to be in now, the ACC is really where I want to play at,” said Carey.

Speaking to NBE last weekend at the Five-Star Super Session Camp, Carey indicated the areas of his game he will be working on the most before entering college as a freshman in the fall of 2012.

“Getting stronger, making my jump shot more consistent, basically strength and conditioning stuff like that,” said Carey.

Carey made the switch this summer from NJ Elite to joined Jimmy Salmon’s NJ Playaz AAU program and will likely see his game pick up even further over the coming months. For Wake Forest basketball fans and staff, Tariq Carey is on to keep tabs on in the coming months, even if other websites aren’t.

The Los Angeles Clippers today signed free agent guard Randy Foye. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not announced.

A four-year NBA veteran, Foye played for the Washington Wizards last season averaging 10.1 points, 3.3 assists, 1.9 rebounds and 23.8 minutes in 70 games. Foye, 26, has played in 261 regular season games and brings career averages of 12.2 points, 3.6 assists and 2.6 rebounds from Minnesota and Washington to Los Angeles.

“We are excited to have the opportunity to add Randy to our team,” said Neil Olshey of the Los Angeles Clippers. “Randy is a player who has improved throughout his time in the league, and is someone who will provide on the ball defense, athleticism, intensity and an impressive ability to score to the group we already have in place.”

The Newark, New Jersey native began his career with Minnesota in 2006-07 and was named to the 2006-07 All-Rookie First Team after appearing in 82 games and averaging 10.1 points. The six-foot-four, 210 pound guard was originally drafted by the Boston Celtics with the seventh overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft and was involved in two draft day deals that brought him to Minnesota.

The former University of Villanova star improved his scoring and assists average in each of his first three NBA seasons, culminating in his career-best 16.3 points per game average in 70 games during the 2008-09 season. Foye joined the Wizards prior to the 2009-10 season in a trade that saw him go to Washington along with Mike Miller for Oleksiv Pecherov, Darius Songaila, Etan Thomas and a 2009 First Round draft pick. Last season, Foye led the Wizards in assists 21 times and scored a career-high 36 points on Feb. 20, 2009 vs. Indiana.

At Villanova, Foye enjoyed an illustrious four-year career that culminated in a senior season that saw him average 20.5 points per game and earn a spot on the 2005-06 NCAA All-American Team while also being named 2006 Big East Player of the Year.

High school basketball coaching legend and bonafide basketball genius Bob Hurley offered up what he called his “Ten Commandments” in a clinic, and I thought I’d share. He didn’t say if this was his original work or if taken from somewhere:

Tariq Carey may not be a household name at this point, but expect that to change this summer. The 6’2 point guard out of East Side High School in Newark, NJ is looking to make his mark on the AAU scene.

Newark East Side, led by sophomore point guard Tariq Carey, enjoyed a terrific season last year going 20-7. Tariq Carey averaged over 14 points per game to go along with 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 1 block per contest.

This summer, Carey is playing with a new AAU team, the New Jersey Playaz, and is looking to make his mark on the national scene.

“AAU is going great so far,” said Carey. “I have known most of the guys on the team for a long time but this is my first year playing with them. We have been playing very well in the tournaments so far. We lost in the semifinals of the Rumble in the Bronx.”

Carey has a lot of the traits colleges are looking for in a point guard. First and foremost, he is a winner.

“I think my biggest strength right now is my competitiveness and toughness. I also have a good handle and speed as well the ability to finish at the rim. I am really working hard this summer on consistency with my jumper. I am shooting the three ball well this summer but I just want to keep working on it. Last week I was in the gym every day putting up 500-1000 shots.”

Not playing on a high profile AAU team the past few years may be the reason Carey is flying a bit under the radar at this time, but it is a role he doesn’t mind.

“I have always been the hunter and not the hunted. A lot of guys get more publicity than I do but that is OK. I am never satisfied with my game and will keep working to get better. Some people have me in the Top 100 right now but that is not good enough for me. I just want to keep improving.”

Despite the lack of national attention, many Division 1 schools have already picked up their recruitment of Carey.

“I hear a lot from Wake Forest, Villanova, and Notre Dame. Actually, Wake Forest is my dream school. I am a big Tim Duncan fan and have been since the 4th or 5th grade. I love the way he handles his business. I have been a big Wake fan since then.”

Carey was able to visit his “dream school” recently when he participated in the Wake Forest Elite Camp.

“Camp was great. It was even better than I thought. I actually did a report on Wake Forest in the 8th grade and to see it in person was even better than I thought. The campus was really nice as well as the facilities. It was big time. I was able to talk to both Coach Bzdelik and Coach Battle while I was there. They said they think I have a chance to be a special player and that my skill set reminds them of Jeff Teague which is a big compliment.”

Look for big things from Tariq Carey this summer. The young man is highly skilled and also highly motivated to go against the best players out there and prove himself. Just by talking with Carey you can tell he will not be intimidated by the competition and is actually anxious to go head to head with all challengers.

The NJ State 17 & Under AAU Tournament was in quarterfinal and than semifinal round action today at Perth Amboy Tech High School. After the six games the championship game is set for Sunday. The Roadrunners will take on Team Izod for the title.

In the first semifinals the Roadrunners A team topped the Jersey Jayhawks 71-53. 5-foot-9 Newark Eastside So. Casim Chandler got the Roadrunners off to a great start with 12 first quarter points as they went ahead 23-13 after one period. Chandler used his quickness to get to the rim to the tune of a a game high 27 points.

The championship of the 50th Annual Donofrio Classic Basketball Tournament was a good one. The Roadrunners, a New Jersey power was battling defending champion I-3 from Philadelphia Tuesday night at the Fellowship House in Conshohocken PA. The two teams emerged from a field of 32 teams. The Roadrunners were going after their 5th Donofrio title.
The entry way of the building was decorated with blown up pictures from some of the championship teams and Philly area legends that had played in the tournament over the years. The players in this year's event were hoping to become memorable as well. On this night, I-3 emerged with a hard fought 103-95 victory.
The Roadrunners battled up hill most of the night, always seeming in striking distance but never able to hold on to a lead. Roadrunners Coach DR Sharpe commented on the performance: "I think we were a little tired. It was our third trip down there in the last five days. I was proud of the kids though. Even when we were down 15 with two minutes left they didn't quit and we made another run at them."
6-foot-2 Duke bound St. Patrick's Sr. Kyrie Irving was his usual brilliant self finishing with 39 and three highlight dunks, two on alleyoops and another on a followup. He did struggle somewhat from long range in this one theough, which is usually a staple of his game. 6-foot-1 St. Bonaventure bound St. Anthony's Sr. Eli Carter added 18 points and 13 rebounds.

There was the versatile and talented Tariq Carey launching up a 3-pointer to keep his Newark East Side team right in it until near the end in an eventual overtime loss to Mendham before a partisan, packed house in the Minutemen’s gym.

Plenty of experiences-virtually all ultimately concluding in defeat-were had by many young basketball players from Essex County this season, all of whom will benefit from the experience-as gut wrenching as it can seem at the time of the loss on the court in early March-moving forward.

It’s not too early to take a look at 2010-2011 and what teams and players will be at the forefront of how Essex County and the SEC progress next winter.

Right now, it’s on to AAU spring ball, summer leagues and camps and fall ball for some where there is plenty of time to become better players in preparation for next November’s start of the official pre-season practices on the day after Thanksgiving.

WELL-STOCKED TEAMS HEADING INTO NEXT SEASON:

Newark East Side- One of the more likeable teams to watch perform this past season, the Red Raiders are guided by the very capable tandem of head man Bryant Garvin and lead assistant Anthony Tavares, and boast a lineup that should return four starters in the sophomores led by the 6-2 Carey, talented 5-9 point guard Kasim Chandler and 6-6 Aaron Bodie along with the 6-4 freshman William Joyce. The Red Raiders will be a definite county title contender along with the Prep.

Whiteside makes instant impact at Marshall

Marshall's Hassan Whiteside arrived on campus intent on proving he was the best shot blocker of any freshman in the nation.

Perhaps he should have set his sights higher.

Whiteside leads the nation with 5.4 blocked shots per game. Only 10 triple-doubles have been recorded across the country this season, and Whiteside has two of them. His instant impact has allowed Marshall to emerge as a contender for the Conference USA title.

"I knew coming in that I'd be the best freshman at blocking shots," Whiteside said, "but I really didn't know how good I'd be against all the seniors and juniors and sophomores in the country."

Marshall (15-4, 4-1 Conference USA) has lost two in a row, but the Thundering Herd are just a game behind first-place UAB in the conference standings heading into Wednesday's home showdown with Memphis (14-5, 4-1).

The Herd probably wouldn't be enjoying this level of success without Whiteside, a 7-footer who ranks as one of the season's biggest surprises. Although he's already an elite shot blocker, a few years ago Whiteside was struggling to earn consistent playing time on his high school team. His lack of coordination and confidence kept him from making the most of his physical skills.

"He was very, very raw," said Anthony Tavares, a coach at East Side High School in Newark, N.J. "He had a nice form on his jump shot, but he really didn't have a clue on how to play basketball."

But what he lacked in polish, Whiteside made up for in work ethic. Tavares remembered how Whiteside would go directly from practice to the local gym, where he would spend a few hours lifting weights and playing more basketball. By the time he left East Side for The Patterson School in Lenoir, N.C., Whiteside was starting to develop into a legitimate prospect.

Hassan Whiteside has always had nice form on his outside shot, but the 7-foot freshman has become an inside force for Marshall.
"Probably in my 10 years of coaching, I've never seen someone improve as much in a short period of time as Hassan did," Tavares said.

Before long, his body was growing at a similar rate. A 6-inch growth spurt late in his high school career caused Whiteside to sprout to 6-11 during the recruiting process. Whiteside now is a legitimate 7-footer who may not be done growing.

Because he didn't have the height of a typical Division I post player until recently, Whiteside spent much of his teenage years developing perimeter skills. His combination of size and athleticism has helped him as a shot blocker.

"He's got really, really incredible timing," Marshall coach Donnie Jones said. "He's got a 7-7 wingspan, so that tells you how long he is. But it's not only his length. He can really time shots."

Whiteside's emergence at The Patterson School helped make him the No. 87 prospect in the 2009 recruiting class. So it came as something of a surprise when he signed with Marshall, which has had just one winning record in the past eight seasons.

At the time he was being recruited, Whiteside knew Marshall primarily as the alma mater of his favorite football player, New England Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss. Whiteside also was familiar with the movie "We Are Marshall," which chronicled how the school and community came together after the 1970 plane crash that killed 37 Marshall football players and five coaches. He soon learned about Jones' background working with Florida post players Al Horford and Joakim Noah as an assistant on Billy Donovan's staff.

Whiteside eventually decided on Marshall primarily because he wanted to help build a program rather than becoming a cog in an established power. Whiteside may look more like Goliath, but he identifies with David. "I've always been for the underdogs," he said. "I always felt like I was an underdog."

Marshall's era as an underdog ended almost as soon as Whiteside stepped on campus. Marshall returned four starters from a team that went 15-17 last season, and Whiteside's arrival gave the Herd the post presence they had lacked.

Whiteside already owns Marshall's single-season record for blocks with 102, and he is threatening to set the NCAA freshman record for per-game blocks; he's at 5.37 and the record is 5.44 by Northeastern's Shawn James in 2004-05.

After Whiteside had 14 points, 17 rebounds and nine blocks against Ohio in an early season victory, Ohio coach John Groce reportedly compared Whiteside's defensive abilities to those of Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden. Groce coached Oden while working as an assistant at Ohio State.

Whiteside has received similar praise from other coaches.

"You get a [7-footer] in the middle who's leading the country in blocked shots, and it's going to make a difference," West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said. "They can show some different things defensively because of him, because they've got a goalkeeper. It's just hard to get it in the basket against him."

While recruiting experts predicted Whiteside could make an instant impact as a shot blocker, conventional wisdom before the season labeled him as a defensive specialist who would need a couple of years to develop an all-around game. But instead of being a liability, Whiteside has emerged as a key performer on offense.

Whiteside averages 12.7 points per game to tie for the team lead. He also ranks second in C-USA in rebounding (9.4) and third in field-goal percentage (.559).

"I always thought I had good offense but, really, when you're a really good shot blocker, it usually overshadows your offense," Whiteside said. "People usually said I'm a really good defensive player, but I always thought I was good at both ends of the court."

Whiteside's play has raised speculation about how long he might stay at Marshall. Whiteside already is projected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft by nbadraft.net, while draftexpress.com projects him as the No. 9 selection in that draft. Of course, he could choose to enter the draft as soon as this year.

Whiteside turns 21 on June 13, making him older than most of his classmates. But he doesn't seem in any hurry to enter the pro ranks.

"Right now, it looks like I'm probably coming back to Marshall," Whiteside said. "I want to win a conference tournament. And I just want to get bigger."

Whiteside is listed as 235 pounds and knows he must add some muscle before he can handle the physical rigors of the NBA's 82-game schedule. And the guy who loved Marshall's underdog nature also doesn't want to leave until he has helped the Herd earn their first NCAA bid since 1987.

"I wasn't even alive then," Whiteside said. "To come in and take them [to the tournament], for a community that's been through tragedy and all that and hasn't seen the team do that in a long, long time, it would be real exciting around here."

Marshall's return to the NCAA tournament for the first time in more than two decades certainly would create plenty of excitement. But it wouldn't be nearly as stunning as Whiteside's transformation.

"It's an unbelievable story, to be honest with you," Tavares said. "From when he first got here to what he's doing now, it's unbelievable."

ESSEX BASKETBALL: Randy Foye is County Player of Decade

Randy Foye was highly visible on the Essex County basketball scene at the beginning of this decade, starring as a sophomore guard for East Side in the 1999-2000. He had another outstanding season as a junior and then capped his high school career by sending East Side to its only NJSIAA Group 4 state championship in 2002 and by earning Star-Ledger Player of the Year honors. And the irrepressible Foye makes himself visible at the end of the decade by being named our Star-Ledger Essex County Player of the Decade.

Oh, you also may have caught him on T.V. a few times over the last few years. The 6-4 Foye is now a member of the Washington Wizards. Foye had flashed signs of unusual strength and a fierce will even as a freshman at East Side. Many thought he would transfer out of East Side during his sophomore season—when five foreign teammates left the program early in the season amid allegations of illegal recruitment—but Foye remained a loyal Red Raider. The team developed around his prodigious talents and they and the long-suffering East Side fans were duly rewarded. East Side won its first Essex County Tournament crown in late March of 2002 and went on to claim Group 4 two weeks later.

An excellent three guard, mostly young group. 6-foot Andre Flanagan is the senior and a capable scorer. 6-foot-2 So. Tariq Carey had a good summer and has a high ceiling. 5-foot-8 So. Casim Chandler is lightning quick and a ballhawk on the defensive end.

6-foot-6 So. Aaron Brodie has a lively young body and a promising upside. 6-foot-5 Sr. Kevin Chandler was a pleasant surprise when we saw him at the William Paterson Team Camp in June. He provides a second interior defender and rebounder.

Bench
Youngsters So. Omar Martinez and Fr. Will Joyce will be counted on for some minutes. Joyce is one of the top incoming frosh in the state.

Coaching
In a fairly unique dynamic the Red Raiders have what amounts to two head coaches in Bryant Garvin and Anthony Tavares. The situation seems to work as the pair have enjoyed quite a bit of success over the years.

Season Prediction

Three talented sophomores in Bodie, Carey and Chandler saw a lot of minutes as frosh. A major step forward is expected. They have some size and athleticism. If they all play together could be a good year in Newark.

Whiteside leads Herd past Ohio

CHARLESTON — Hassan Whiteside tied a Marshall University men’s basketball record for blocking shots Saturday night, but it wasn’t the best day he ever had.
Whiteside, who swatted away nine Ohio field goal tries in Marshall’s 60-53 victory over the Bobcats in the Charleston Civic Center, said afterward he once had 25 blocks in a prep school game.
Ohio players probably felt like he rejected that many of their shots, and used his 7-foot height and long arms to affect their aim on several other looks at the basket.
Oh, yes, Whiteside also toyed with a rare triple-double as he scored 14 and grabbed 17 rebounds.Marshall (4-1) rode the freshman’s performance to a solid win.
“If that’s what it takes, I’ll try to do it every night,” Whiteside said. “I’ll do whatever it takes to try to make the Herd better.”
Whiteside matched the Thundering Herd record of nine blocks set first by Omar Roland against Chattanooga on Jan. 3, 1990, then first tied by Latece Williams against the University of Charleston on Nov. 17,2000.
Marshall head coach Donnie Jones said he had no idea Whiteside was within reach of a triple-double when he replaced him with 29 seconds left in the game.
Jones said having a shot-blocking center is like having a goalie guarding the basket.Because of the blocks, Marshall was able to pressure the Bobcats (4-1), who made only 25.9 percent of their field goal attempts and were 6-for-26 on 3-point shots.
“He (Whiteside) did a good job manning the paint and it affected our two-point shooting percentage,” Ohio head coach John Groce said.
Herd forward Tyler Wilkerson, limited to 21 minutes on the court because of fouls, still scored 10 and grabbed seven rebounds. Guards Shaq Johnson and Darryl Merthie both added nine points.
Ohio wing player Tommy Freeman scored 16 on 4-of-8 3-point shooting and freshman guard D.J. Cooper had 15 points.
Marshall built a 14-point lead on Johnson’s 3-pointer with 17:03 left in the game, but Ohio refused to go away.
The Bobcats avoided Whiteside often enough to reduce the deficit to 55-51 when Cooper connected on a 3-pointer 1:20 remaining.
Ohio’s comeback bid was aided by some Marshall miscues, but the Herd played well defensively to hold on.
“Defense was the key, and rebounding, as I’ve been preaching,” Jones said. “We shut down what I thought was the best offensive team we’ve played.”
On Ohio’s next possession Whiteside reached out to block a shot by Armon Bassett.
Damier Pitts for the Herd was fouled and made a pair of free throws with 29 seconds to go for a 57-51 advantage.
Wilkerson sank three of four free throws in the final 18 seconds.
Marshall completed the Global Sports Invitational as the unofficial champion with a 4-0 record. Ohio finished the event at 3-1.
The crowd of 2,515 spectators was definitely pro-Marshall.
Jones used nine players and they all scored. Dago Pena (headaches) and Cam Miller (foot infection) were in uniform, but didn’t play.

Tariq Carey, Newark East Side, NJ (12 Points, NJ MVP): Carey is a solid prospect. He has a nice handle, good body control and the lateral quickness to be a pesky defender. He demonstrated the ability to hit the mid-range, baseline jumper, knock down three-balls and get to the rim. Very much worth keeping an eye on as he continues to develop his game.

Tariq Carey, 2012: The MVP for New Jersey came on strong in the fourth quarter after not doing all that much in the first three periods. He showed an ability to get to the basket and finish, and also demonstrated his three-point shooting ability and range when he knocked in a few outside jumpers.

TARIQ CAREY: Tariq had assistant coaches from St. John’s, Seton Hall and St. Joe’s visit and watch him workout recently.

Carey will attend the St. John’s Stormfest on October 22nd, Villanova Midnight Madness on October 23rd, a Seton Hall Exhibition game on October 30th. In addition, he will take an unofficial to St. Joe’s on October 18th and will compete in the Eddie Griffin Classic on October 25th.

Randy Foye gets "in the flow" when paired with another ball-handler

RICHMOND -- For Randy Foye, training camp might as well have been dubbed "The Great Point Guard Experiment, Part II." The new Wizard, whom current Wizards assistant coach Randy Wittman tried to make a point guard when he was coaching the Minnesota Timberwolves, spent nearly every drill, scrimmage and set initiating the offense on the ball during the week-long training camp.

So how'd he grade out in his first preseason game? Well, there was that one possession in the second quarter where he missed a wide-open Mike Miller spotting up at the three-point line, instead flinging an off-balanced runner against three defenders. There was that other possession where he got to the basket, but had everyone collapse on him and eventually committed a turnover.

Through three quarters, Foye had five points on 1-5 shooting, with just one assist and two turnovers. He looked uncomfortable and unnatural, like a square peg in a round hole.

"In the beginning, [I] just had a little bit of jitters," Foye said. "New team, new guys, new offense, so I had to get accustomed to everything."

Then, in the fourth quarter, coach Flip Saunders put Miller in the game with Foye for an extended stretch. The result? Foye looked more comfortable, tallying nine points in the quarter, Miller was more involved in the offense and the Wizards pulled away to get a victory. Maybe it was the poor level of the opposition, but both players -- and the offense -- just looked more comfortable.

"In the fourth quarter, guys didn't really search shots," Saunders said after the game. "They just kind of played, moved the ball, and if a guy had a shot, he took it."

It's still very, very early, but the stint raises some interesting questions regarding both players' roles this season.

For Foye, it makes you wonder whether it makes sense for Saunders to employ him as a pure point guard like Gilbert Arenas. Last year in Minnesota, Foye spent time at both guard positions, but his production, at least offensively, was significantly better as a shooting guard than as a point guard. But with so many shooting guards already on the roster, Saunders and company have played Foye at point guard because it gives him the best chance to get playing time.

Earlier in training camp, Foye said he had a leg up on learning Saunders' system because Wittman ran a similar offense during his coaching tenure in Minnesota. He sounded confident that he was picking Flip's sets up. But once he had to do it in a game, Foye admitted that switching back to playing point guard was an adjustment.

"Last year, I was at the 2, and the point a little bit, but this is something new for me, so at the beginning, I had to get my mentality back of playing point guard and setting everyone up," he said.

True to his optimistic, steady nature, Foye said that he picked it up as the game continued, saying "once I got into the flow, that was it." But Saunders made a subtle change, one that probably empowered Foye as much as it empowered the team. Rather than rely on Foye to create shots for everybody, Saunders put the ball in Miller's hands more often on pick and rolls, allowing Foye to do some spotting up instead of feeling pressured to make every play.

"I tried to put [Miller] in there because I thought he would help Randy a little bit, calm him down, which I thought it did," Saunders said. "Randy looked pretty comfortable and he started knocking down some shots."

The result was that the Wizards scored 30 points in the final period, even though none of the starters were on the floor. More importantly, it provided Foye with some comfort and familiarity during a time when he's trying to re-learn yet another new approach to the game. Foye admitted afterwards that playing with Miller reminded him of their time together in Minnesota.

"Last year, when Mike would get rebounds, we used to just take off, because Mike could handle the ball," Foye said. "A couple times, I caught myself going off running, and I heard Coach saying 'Get the ball Randy!' so I had to run back."

The subtle switch also empowered Miller, who had previously been content to stand around and not get involved in the offense. Miller's problem in Minnesota was that he was too unselfish, but he barely made a dent doing anything in the second quarter yesterday because Foye was the one doing the creating. In the fourth quarter, however, Miller was setting others up, showing off his all-around game that many of us didn't believe he possessed. His numbers might not reflect his impact, but he was making plays that eventually led to open shots for others, like the time he delivered a beautiful touch pass to JaVale McGee for a huge slam.

"Randy [Foye] is still learning the [point guard] position; he's not really as vocal as you'd want him to be right now," Saunders said. "Mike gives you another facilitator. Mike's almost like a point guard that plays small forward, [because he can] handle the ball and get guys in their spots."

Miller left the locker room too quick for anyone to ask him questions last night, but all through training camp, he has talked about fitting in and making an impact on the floor without doing anything because of his shooting reputation. But as we saw yesterday, Miller has too many great skills that go to waste if he just serves as a spot-up shooter. Perhaps that's what Minnesota wanted him to do, but there are so many weapons here that Miller could be setting up.

One of those weapons is Randy Foye. For both players' sake, playing together and trading off the ball-handling duties might be the key in getting them both to adjust to a new situation.

Stormfest 2009

St. John’s did all the right things last season when they rolled out the red carpet for literally every local recruit in the New York area with their version of midnight madness. “Stormfest” is the name of the student pep rally for both the men’s and women’s basketball team which is held in Taffner field house.

The pep rally consists of many different promotional giveaways for students, women’s intrasquad scrimmage, men’s intrasquad scrimmage, and dunk contest to wrap it up.

A source close to the team has confirmed that this year’s Stormfest will be held on October 22nd and you can expect a large guest list of recruits on campus for the festivities. This event is open to the general public.* Here is a look at who to expect:

Not only did St. John’s reach out to recruits but also one notable alumnus. No no no, I’m not talking about myself but rather Howie Schwab, who is the host of his own sports trivia show on ESPN called Stump the Schwab. It was nice to see St. John’s finally reaching out and including one of their own but we’re hoping for more this year.

It would be great to see St. John’s extend personal invitations to Mike Francessa (WFAN, YES), Brian Kenny (ESPN), Daryl McDaniels(Run DMC), John Franco (Former New York Met), and of course to all the basketball alumni. St. John’s has some tradition but its just been buried for so long that we have forgotten about it. We need to dig it up and resurrect this program back to where it should be.

We need to make people proud to call themselves redmen, excuse me I meant redstorm, again. Lets start embracing the ambassadors of the University we call alumni and tap into our potential instead of shunning it. This can be a very nice event like we had last year or it could be legendary and make these potential student athletes say, “I want to commit to St. John’s.” Please remember, St. John’s, they call this midnight madness for a reason. No matter what happens I’m excited to see this team together on the court and yes the season is right around the corner (look at top right of the screen for countdown timer).

There is a new name making waves up in Newark, NJ these days, Tariq Carey. The 6-foot-2 170 pound combo guard from Newark EastSide had a breakthrough summer and now finds himself rocketing up the rankings in the 2012 class. Not surprisingly, the high majors are catching on quickly.

Carey shared his lengthy list of summer activities with ScarletNation. "I went to St. John's Elite Camp, Hoop Group Elite, WVU and the Super Showcase in July. In August, I went to SMU's Elite Camp, Five Star, and then back to Hoop Group Elite. In between, I was in the weight room and the gym working on my game and my jump shot. I made the All Star team for Five Star and Hoop Group on all my visits. It was a good experience to play against the top players in my region. I just want to keep challenging myself to get better and better."

While that might have been enough for most young players like Carey, he hasn't stopped there. "I recently took an unofficial visit to St. Johns, and they stopped by during an open gym to check me out again. I really like the coaches there. I was at Rutgers this past weekend for Fall Jam Fest"

All reports suggest that Carey stood out amongst the talent laden field at RU, which included fellow rising sophomores Kyle Anderson and Amile Jefferson.

When asked to comment on his game, Carey has this to offer: "I'm a strong penetrator. I can get in the lane at will against most guards. I'm also crafty with the ball and I rarely get it stolen from me. I play the passing lanes well on defense, and I'm a willing learner. I do need to become a more consistent shooter and once I do, I believe the sky is the limit for me. I'm working hard to improve my range and consistency."

And although Carey's profile has increased dramatically these past few months, he remains amazingly grounded, and has a strong connection with his family. "My mother inspires me because she is always teaching me the right thing to do, so when I'm out on my own I won't have to depend on anyone. She is also my biggest supporter and someone I can talk to if I have a bad game."

His offensive "shortcomings" don't seem to be scaring away the recruiters though. Schools showing early interest include St. Johns, SMU, Arkansas, Temple, Notre Dame, Penn State, Siena, St. Josephs, Oregon State, and Missouri.

Carey is ranked among NJ Hoops top 10 sophomores.

Tariq Carey is not the only 2012 prospect from Newark Eastside (N.J.) getting college interest (see more on Carey in our Class of 2012 Intro: Tariq Carey).

Aaron Bodie, a 6-foot-6 rising sophomore forward, is on the radar of several schools, and his list is undoubtedly going to grow as he matures.

“I know St. John’s asked me to bring him up this Tuesday with Tariq,” said Troy Long, Bodie’s coach at Eastside. “St. Joseph’s and George Mason have been inquiring.

“I think his recruitment will be a wait and see. It would be a big story for a public [school] to have so many D-1 kids in one class.”

Keep an eye on this young, athletic forward, who can be one of the best players in the state if he grows a couple of inches and develops his current skill set.

Former All-State guard getting second chance at New York school

Corey Chandler, the former Rutgers guard who left the program earlier this month, has found a new home. According to multiple sources Chandler will be transferring to Binghamton University.

The New York school is led by 2009 America East Coach of the Year Kevin Broadus. Last season, Binghamton was 23-9 and lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Duke, 86-62.

Chandler has two seasons of eligibility remaining and will have to sit out a year per NCAA rules.

After spending two tumult filled years at Rutgers, the Newark native will moveon to a school that has recently gained a reputation for giving second chances to players with not so perfect pasts.

Chandler, an All-State selection at East Side in Newark, came to Rutgers prior to the 2007-08 season as Hill's first big-name recruit. His time at the school did not play out as expected.

In the midst of two-losing seasons, Chandler's playing time wavered and so did his production. In 32 games as a sophomore, he averaged 7 points and 3.3 rebounds with 11 starts. He averaged 11.9 points and 4 rebounds his freshman year. There were also rumors of off-field problems.

Garden state soph is one college coaches are watching already

The state of New Jersey has several of the top players in the classes of 2010 and 2011 this season in the high school ranks, namely Michael Gilchrist, Kyrie Irving, Rakeem Christmas, Dion Waiters, Myck Kabongo and more.

But what about 2012? Who is the next to wear the crown as the marquee prospect from the Garden State?

Paterson Catholic prospect Kyle Anderson gets more attention, but Tariq Carey might be the best player in the state.

The 6-foot-1 combo guard from Newark Eastside (N.J.) is developing rapidly, and was impressive when NBE saw him at the Hoop Group HBC Metro Summer Showcase and the St. John’s Elite Camp.

Apparently various colleges have also taken notice of the rising sophomore.

“Oregon State, Villanova, Penn State, Seton Hall, George Mason,” Carey provided when asked about his current school list. He did add that he hasn’t picked up any offers yet.

Even though he does not have to decide on a school for a couple of years, Carey is already checking out potential destinations.

“I’m supposed to be heading up to St. John’s September 2,” he said. “That’s the latest on the schedule dealing with visits.

“I [also] went on a tour of SMU when I went down for their Elite Camp August 7-9, that’s about it.”

Carey’s high school coach, Troy Long, added that he was trying to set up a visit to Villanova in September as well. Long also states that St. Joseph’s and Siena are showing interest in Carey.

Carey discussed that all of the attention from colleges has come very quickly – but he is not going to rest on his laurels until he reaches all of his goals.

“It feels real good,” he said. “Only a year ago I was talking how I wanted to be on the Internet and get noticed, and a year later I’m getting a lot of recognition. I’m still not there yet because I want to try to be a McDonald’s All-American.”

Despite the number of schools currently courting Carey’s services, he’s not content with his standing nationally, and wants to become a household name across the country.

“They wont ever give [me] a chance to be ranked higher than Kyle Anderson,” he said. “I feel that, if I’m not better, we’re equal. I should be number two this year, that’s just my opinion. I mean, he’s good and all but I think the truth should be the truth. If you’re better than somebody, you shouldn’t base them off of what school they go to. But that’s how it goes.”

Carey, whose dream school is Wake Forest, made his presence known at many of the events he attended this summer by himself and with Team New Jersey Elite, and is hoping more people begin to take notice of the competition he is outplaying.

“Everybody knows I’m good and every time I go to a camp, I do really well,” he said. “Like Eastern [Hoop Group Elite], all the big-name freshmen [were] there, include me, and I was still ranked higher than every other freshman.”

“And some of the ranking websites,” he continued, “most of the people that’s ranked higher than me, I destroyed.”

Carey is a smooth player who is not afraid of going up and finishing around the rim with contact. He gets to the basket very well, driving down the lane or along the baseline. The athletic guard also has a decent mid-range game and is crafty with the ball. Defensively, he picks up steals by playing the passing lanes well. His only weakness right now is his outside shot, as he uses his quickness to consistently drive past defenders instead.

“He is a hard-working kid who stays in the gym,” Long said. “He loves challenges and wants to play against the best so if someone is ranked higher than him, he will go at them hard.”

Long also attributes some of Carey’s growth to a current New Jersey high school superstar.

“He is like Kyrie Irving’s little brother,” Long said. “Kyrie always takes care of him and gets him into stuff. He met Kyrie when he was in the 8th grade. They were friends every since. He looks up to Kyrie and Kyrie always gives him advice. They went to the St. John’s Elite Camp together and Kyrie got him into Five-Star with him as well. He’s always giving him tips and pointers.”

While Carey is the go-to-guy on his AAU team, he is constantly honing his game to try and showcase his skills. That goal was fulfilled when he made the all-star game at this week’s Five-Star Camp.

“My coach even said that ‘Tariq is able to do the things he does when he goes to camp because he works on his game,’” Carey said.

PEZINOK, Slovakia – Rutgers rising junior guard Corey Chandler (Newark, N.J.) scored 13 points, grabbed three rebounds and had three steals to help the East Coast All-Stars to a 100-95 victory over AB Cosmetics Pezinok on Saturday evening. RU rising sophomore forward Patrick Jackson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) contributed seven points and four rebound, as the All-Stars improved to 3-0 on their foreign tour of Prague, Bratislava and Vienna.

Jackson and Chandler reportedly showed up to play in the tour’s toughest contest. Jackson consistently rebounded and finished with fervor. Chandler wanted the ball in his hands down the stretch, coming up with crucial thefts and big baskets in the final few minutes of the game.

"Big time players are expected to make big time plays," said head coach Guy Rancourt. “And they certainly did not let us down tonight.”

In a charged atmosphere with more than 1,100 fans in attendance, Pezinok's Niko Milosevic, the starting point guard of the 2009 Top Division Champions, pulled up for what seemed to be a game changing shot. All-Star Chris Kehoe had other plans in mind, coming out of nowhere to block the attempt. He advanced the ball to Chandler for the exclamation point finish to seal the thrilling win.

A strong Pezinok team fought hard throughout the contest. The home squad trailed by a slim 26-23 margin at the conclusion of the opening quarter. The teams continued to battle back and forth in the second stanza as the visitors were only able to stretch their lead to 50-46 at intermission. Pezinok's veteran big man Alec Lukjanec came out in the second half with a purpose, knocking down threes and getting to the foul line. Pezinok held its first advantage of the contest, 74-73, as the third quarter came to a close. Solid guard play from the All-Stars in the final 10 minutes, however, ensured the victory.

The East Coast All Stars continue their tour on Sunday against AB Basket Levice, another Slovakian Top Division opponent.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers junior guard Corey Chandler (Newark, N.J.) and sophomore forward Patrick Jackson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) will compete with the East Coast All-Stars during a tour of Prague, Czech Republic, and Vienna, Austria, from August 2-12, 2009. A select group of collegiate players, the All-Stars are scheduled to play five games against top European teams during the tour.

“Corey and Patrick have worked extremely hard this summer, both on and off the court,” said head coach Fred Hill. “This trip presents another opportunity for them to grow educationally and culturally, while also improving their skills on the hardwood. I’m confident they will do a great job representing Rutgers.”

Rutgers basketball is accumulating its frequent flyer miles this summer. The team took a foreign tour to Spain and the Canary Islands from May 23-31. The Scarlet Knights were a perfect 4-0 against foreign club teams on the excursion, which also featured cultural tours and sightseeing endeavors. Guards Mike Coburn and Mike Rosario then competed internationally shortly after their return. A member of the Jamaican National Team, Coburn played both guard spots for Jamaica and helped the team to the Gold Medal at the 2009 Caribbean Championships, held June 30 -July 4 in Tortola, British Virgin Islands. Rosario competed for the Puerto Rico U19 National Team at the 23rd World Juniors Basketball Tournament in Douai, France (June 10-14), before traveling to Auckland, New Zealand for the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championship (July 2-12).

Chandler played in all 32 games (11 starts) in 2008-09 and averaged 7.0 points and 3.3 rebounds-per game. Jackson competed in 17 contests as a true freshman last season. During the tour of Spain and the Canary Islands, Jackson led the team in scoring (13.8) and averaged 7.3 rebounds-per-game.

The East Coast All-Stars roster also includes West Virginia forward Cam Thoroughman, Kansas State point guard Jacob Pullen, KSU forward Dominique Sutton and Cleveland State center Joe Latas.

Tariq Carey continued his early summer good play at the St. John's elite camp. During the drills he worked with Paris Horne from St. John's (who played for the same AAU team as Carey in HS) and got individual instruction from the coaching staff. Coach Casey has Newark ties and he treatedd everyone really great. Toward the end of the camp they played two games and Tariq played on the same team as JayVaughn Pinkston. It was a good experience to be playing with the best rising senior in NYC. Aaron Bodie was also in attendance but did not participate.

Tariq Carey, Newark Eastside (2012): One of the rising players in New Jersey basketball, Carey looked smooth with the ball and was not afraid of going up and finishing around the rim with contact. He had good drives to the basket, both down the lane and baseline. The athletic guard showed a semblance of a mid-range game, and also had an excellent play where he spun around a defender and drove to the rim. Defensively, he plays the passing lanes well. However, he did not show much of an outside shot, consistently driving past defenders instead.

Aaron Bodie, Newark Eastside (2012): Bodie was a surprising performer this past weekend. He is extremely athletic and showed excellent leaping ability. The long, 6-6 forward used his supreme athleticism for multiple eye-opening dunks and finishes around the rim, as well as blocked shots and rebounds. Defensively, he is very solid, due to his length. He intercepted several passes and also drew a charge. Bodie gets decent position and has good hands for a young player.

A team to keep an eye on in the future is Eastside High School of Newark (NJ). While they did not make the final eight, class of 2012 prospects Aaron Bodie and Tariq Carey are going to be a pair to be reckoned with in New Jersey high school action the next three seasons. Carey, who impressed NBE at the Reebok Tryout Headliner Camp in Somerset (NJ) earlier this month where he earned an invite to the recent Reebok Underclass Breakout Camp, is already citing interest from SMU, St. Joseph’s and Siena and that will certainly grow in numbers and stature in the future.

SMU is a private university of 11000 students near the vibrant heart of Dallas. Here’s a photo of him with assistant coach Steve Lutz. Freshman (2012) at Newark East Side High School. Good build for a young high-major prospect. Great speed and uses it well on defense. Nice alley-oop pass for the dunk to a teammate. Very, very active, great hustle as well. Nice no-look pass behind the backboard for the easy basket. Great shake-n-bake move when heavily guarded where he back-tracked and switched hands for the easy lay-up. Plays very hard, I can see him being a top 50 player in his class when it’s all said and done. Good court awareness. Had another nice play where he basically did a circle with the ball in the paint, driving around the defenders, then taking the ball in for the easy bucket. Finished with 12 points in the game I watched. Earned invite to the Reebok Breakout Underclass Camp (June 19-21) in Dallas.

Reebok started their Regional Headliner Camps a few years back so that some players could earn invitations to their Reebok All American Camp and Reebok Breakout Camp for younger stars. They also run the Proving Ground Regional Combine for other good prospects.

The top performers at the Headliner Camp this past weekend at Franklin High School did just that. With their spirited play they have earned invitations to one of the Reebok Summer Camps. The Reebok All American Camp is in Philadelphia and the Breakout Camp is set for Dallas.

Randy Foye returns to Newark to make a difference

During the 1990s, young athletes everywhere wanted "to be like Mike." Children idolized Michael Jordan and Gatorade ads suggested its product could help them play like him.
Today, kids mimic moves from LeBron James and Kobe Bryant and wear their sneakers in hopes of being like their idols. But one NBA star from Newark has a different message for the youths in his community. He created his own foundation to help spread the message.
Playing in his third season with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Randy Foye comes back to the city where he grew up to teach Newark students that if they study and work hard, they can be as successful as he has been.
"These kids didn't see me 10 or 15 years ago. I didn't drive a nice car then," Foye said. "I want them to see they can be like me."
Not every Newark athlete will make it to the professional level, but with guidance, all of them are capable of creating successful futures. And Newark's athletic successes are returning to share this message.
The Randy Foye Foundation is an organization that has set out to do just that. It raises money for programs and projects aimed at helping Newark residents. Last summer, it offered a free basketball camp in Rumson for Newark youths. It hosts fundraising events that include basketball games and the organization's summer gala.
It also provides a mentoring program called Assist 4 Life, in which Foye and members from his foundation's staff work closely with seven students from Dr. E. Alma Flagg School to make sure they are trying hard in school and striving to achieve their goals for the future.
"Before (participating in Assist 4 Life), I didn't push myself to do extra work, but since the program, I've been involved in a lot more," said Aloma Brooks, seventh-grader at Dr. E. Alma Flagg School. Now, she is also participating in medical programs at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and Rutgers because she wants to be a pediatrician.
Foye stresses education to his students at his foundation, emphasizing that had he not performed well in school, he would not have had the opportunity to play basketball at Villanova. This is why he requires all students participating in his foundation to sign a contract that promises they will keep their grades up.
Members of the foundation visit the students at their school every week. Those who achieve high standards are then rewarded. Aloma made high honors, so the foundation sent her to Foye's game in Philadelphia. They also paid for buses to take the school's high honor roll students to Foye's game when he was in town playing the New Jersey Nets.
"I used to always think it was impossible for me to be on honor roll," Brooks said. "Now I always try to think of the positive and believe in the impossible. That's Randy's phrase, believe in the impossible."
Only in its first full school year, the program is growing. The foundation started at Alma Flagg because that was the elementary school that Foye attended. It will continue to work with students in the inaugural class after they graduate in hopes of expanding its programs. Specifically, East Side High School will be targeted as the next location for the program, said Christina Vuocolo, vice president of the organization. With Foye at the head, students find motivation even when they are struggling.
He communicates with students throughout the school year via e-mail, video and during occasional games when the Timberwolves plays area teams. Meanwhile, members of the foundation visit the school every week to discuss the importance of academics, conduct reading and writing exercises and discuss character-building -- often using Foye's life as an example.
Foye lost his parents before he turned 6. Raised by his grandmother and aunts, he didn't use his loss as an excuse to fall into a life of drugs or crime.
"It helped me become a man at an early age," Foye said. "I was always my own person because I never followed anyone."
He did follow sports. Foye played a little bit of everything, but he said basketball simulated life best because he had to be tough and be able to think on the court. His coach at East Side, Bryant Garvin, credited those traits with Foye's success.

Basketball was also an opportunity for the Newark kid to see the world, even before he played at Villanova University, where he graduated, or entered the NBA. Foye played in different states and countries, which he said was best for him because it gave him a chance to leave Newark -- he didn't feel like he was stuck in one place.
This is something he wants to offer students participating in his foundation. Last summer, he invited them to his home in Red Bank for a barbecue. Afterwards, he took them shopping for clothes to wear at the foundation's gala. They later attended a Newark Bears game.
"When you get out of there, you have to have as much fun as you can before going back," Foye said.
His students did not only enjoy their outing with the NBA star last summer, but it introduced them to a brand new world.
"The program is an opportunity for me to have new experiences," said Aloma, the seventh-grader. "I never saw a mansion before. Maybe I can do the same thing and give back where I came from."
Currently, only students from Alma Flagg benefit from the Assist 4 Life program, although Foye and his organization donate money to community projects as well. Students interested in participating in the program wrote essays about their lives and foundation members used their essays to choose program participants. Aloma wrote about how her grandmother almost died and how that experience affected her life. Hearing Foye's story, she said she could relate to his loss.
She also relates to Foye's desire to give back to Newark. Aloma wants to go to Princeton and said once she is successful, she plans to give back to hospitals, shelters and schools in the city.
Of course, other athletes from Newark have given money to the city before, but Foye said his mission is different because he didn't want to wait until he was in the pros for 10 or 15 years. He knew as a young boy that he would make money doing something and he would give it back to the city where he was raised. He didn't want to wait to do it. He started his foundation in September 2007.
Future stars are working for similar accomplishments.
Hector Santiago, 21, who grew up in North Newark, is pitching in his third season for the Chicago White Sox minor league organization. His life was always about baseball, he said. His social life was baseball, which was why he was not distracted by crime or drugs.
"(Newark) was rough, but if you want something, then you have to go for it," Santiago said. "You have to stay away from the drugs and gangs."
Santiago played on many teams, including the North Ward Center. And like basketball did for Foye, baseball took the young athlete to many places outside of the city -- Santiago played for teams in Florida and Pennsylvania.
And if he makes it to the majors, Newark youths will also benefit from his success because Santiago wants to open an indoor baseball field for Newarkers. He said the lack of facilities for off-season training is a disadvantage for people in Newark, and he wants to fix that.
Santiago said he was motivated by his family and his passion for his sport to achieve his goal. Foye followed his own path. But both realize that many youths in Newark need help discovering their potential -- not just athletically, but academically. That's why they both continue coming back to Newark.
"Now, basketball is a business for me. I am marketing myself, helping friends and family," Foye said. "Somehow in my head, when I was younger, I knew I was going to be rich and I was going to give money to Newark."

Allen Bush Named Preseason All-American by CDS

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Junior defensive back Allen Bush (Newark, N.J.) of the American International College football team has been named a 2009 Preseason all-American by Consensus Draft Services.

Bush, a first-team Northeast-10 all-star and an all-region selection by Don Hansen’s Football Gazette, led the team with four interceptions for the season and recorded 37 tackles. He also led the team with 11 pass breakups and ranked second on the team with two blocked kicks.

AIC posted a record of 9-2 this season and captured its third conference title since 1999 with a perfect 7-0 record in the Northeast-10. The Yellow Jackets also made their first-ever NCAA playoff berth. The nine wins are the second-most in program history. AIC also won nine games in 2000 and won a school-record 10 games in 1999.

6-foot-7 225 lb Newark Eastside Sr. Eddie Brown has made his college choice. Brown has decided to head west and attend Hill Junior College in Lamar Hillsboro Texas.

Hill College is a Division 1 Junior College and a member of the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference and Region V North, which includes teams from North and Central Texas.

Brown helped lead the Raiders to a 16-13 mark this past season in the rugged Watchung Conference. The Red Raiders finished ranked 72nd in the state.

Juice Flows Past New Heights

Former Eastsider Hassan Whiteside is spending some time in NJ with his family and came back to play in various games and leagues. Here's a little blurb on him from Rivals/NYCHoops.net.

In the third quarter, New Heights would cut the deficit to eight points. However, the presence of Juice's 6-foot-11 center Hassan Whiteside (Patterson School, NC), who will be attending Marshall University next season, was too much for the opposition handle. Whiteside, who finished with a game-high 20 points, dominated New Heights in the paint consistently throughout the second half. "I started dominating later on in the second half," Whiteside told NYCHoops.net

After New Heights trimmed the Juice lead to six points, Whiteside responded inside with a vicious two handed dunk on which he was fouled. Whiteside converted the three-point play to put the Juice All-Stars back up by nine. They would lead again by double-digits as they cruised easily to a 15 point victory.

Top Frosh at Hoop Group Top 100

Tariq Carey (pictured) of Newark Eastside is one of two Raiders on our list of the top 5 freshmen we saw at the Hoop Group Elite Metro Top 100. On Monday and Tuesday night the Hoop Group held their Elite Top 100 at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Hackensack. Close to 150 prospects, the majority from New Jersey were participating. There was a good mix of different grades involved from seniors to a few really good younger players. While we were there both nights we didn't get to see everyone we felt it was still worthwhile to mention those players that impressed us.
